This was my first time trying one of Amy’s burritos. The bean and rice burrito sounded like a good bet for a vegan version. I was a little surprised at the calorie count for it though because at 320 calories it’s way more than a snack, but the burrito is fairly small so it looks more like a snack or part of a meal.
Nutritional Info and ingredients.
It tastes pretty standard for a pinto bean and rice burrito, good, but not amazing. It’s a little too high in fat and sodium for my liking, but maybe for a small meal it will work for others. It reheats really easily which makes it an easy meal. I think I will make a recipe for this myself because it’s pretty simple to create. 🙂
Here’s my overall review score.
Basic Nutritional Info:Â 300 calories 8 grams of fat 24% fat by calories 10 g of protein
Price:Â $1.98 USD Â In Canada about $4
Taste:Â 4/5
Texture:Â 4/5, tortillas is a little dry but that’s to be expected in lower fat tortillas
Healthfulness:Â 2/5 (high in fat and sodium)
Looks:Â 4/5
Low fat:Â No, medium fat recipe
Vegan:Â Yes
Gluten Free:Â No
Soy Free:Â Yes
Nut Free:Â Yes

Would I eat it again? Yes, but I think I’m more apt to make one myself.
What could be improved? Use less oil in the recipe and lower the sodium content. It’s a little too high to be considered health food.

Have you ever had Amy’s Bean & Rice Burrito? What did you think?

I used to bring this to work for lunch. It’s convenient but I agree that it tastes only so-so. I’d note that the oil in it is high-oleic safflower/sunflower oil, which is a relatively healthy oil according to some vegan nutritionists.
Also, have you tried La Reina Unsalted Baked Organic Corn Tortilla Chips? There are pictures at http://www.thehealthyvegans.com/2010/10/oil-free-baked-tortilla-chips-by-la.html. The nutritional label lists just two ingredients: whole grain stoneground corn and trace of lime. I’ve never seen these chips in any local stores, but it’s sold by some online stores. It’d be nice to have something like a healthy chip for salsa and guac to go along with a vegan burrito — do you think this would work?

After reading this review I was made aware of the high fat content. That alone makes it an occasional food not a healthy everyday food.
